A gondola is much more than just a uniquely shaped vessel. It is a symbol of Venice, telling a story of elegance, history, culture, the slow pace of life and romance. For centuries, the gondola has been an integral part of Venice’s calling card. And yet, their magic is not only felt in Italy today. Today, that special atmosphere can also be felt in Lithuania – in the very centre of Vilnius and in Trakai. A gondola ride on the Neris River invites you to recreate the Venetian mood – but with Lithuanian natural scenery, distinctive architecture and cultural flavour.
Where did the gondola come from?
A gondola is an ancient, hand-operated boat that has been used in Venice since the 13th century. At that time, the city was a powerful commercial centre with thousands of canals that replaced the ordinary streets. Since land roads were narrow and impractical, the inhabitants needed a reliable and manoeuvrable means of transport – thus the gondola was born.
Initially, it was a simple, functional vessel. But over time, it became a symbol of prestige and status, especially among the Venetian aristocracy. They decorated their gondolas with carvings, velvet seats, silver and gold details. However, in order not to be constrained by the finery, the Venetian authorities in the 16th century introduced a strict rule that all gondolas must be painted black. This rule still applies today.
How to identify a real gondola?
The gondola is distinguished not only by its shape, but also by the precision and balance of its manufacture. The classic gondola is approximately 11 metres long and is made of more than 280 handcrafted parts using 8 different types of wood: oak, larch, cherry, elm, lime, spruce, walnut and olive.
The nacelle hull is also asymmetrical, with one side longer than the other. This solution allows the gondolier to paddle from one side and maintain a straight course and stability.
And the metal decoration at the front of the ship, the “ferro”, hides a deep symbolism: its six “teeth” represent the six districts of Venice, while its curved shape symbolises the Grand Canal.

- To become a gondolier, you need a licence, theory and practical exams, the ability to tell the city’s story and interact with passengers.

- A real gondola weighs around 350 kg, but its ideal balance makes it extremely easy and quiet to sail.

A gondola ride on the Neris River is an unexpected way to see the capital from a different angle. From the water, you can see a whole new side of Vilnius: the tower of Gediminas Castle, verdant hills, Baroque church spires and the outlines of modern skyscrapers.
It’s not just a romantic activity for two – it’s also a family outing, a moment of peace for city dwellers, or even an original party venue. Powered by an electric motor, the boat sails silently, leaving noise and rush behind.
